RALEIGH, NC – Members of the NC State tennis team spent the summer all over the world competing.
This weekend Kyle Spencer will have parts of his group back together for the first time.
Four members of the tennis team - Luca Staeheli, Robin Catry, Braden Shick, Martin Borisiouk - will travel to South Carolina for the Gamecock Shootout, September 15-17.
Two of those players, Staeheli and Catry, earned spots in the recent ITA preseason polls. Staeheli and Catry were No. 5 in the doubles. Staeheli was ranked No. 48 in the singles and Catry was ranked No. 100.
Since this will be a first look at some of his athletes, head coach Kyle Spencer will use this time to evaluate his guys' progression.
"Making sure we're being ourselves," Spencer said. "Making sure we're playing the way that we want. Whether that presents wins and loses or what have you, just more so the idea that we are going out and playing the way that we say we want to."
All four athletes will play both doubles at the shootout. Catry will begin play at 9 am on Friday versus Holden Koons of Wake Forest. Borisiouk will open play against Tyler Stice of Auburn, also at 9 am. Shick will take on Gustaf Strom of Arizona and Staeheli will play South Carolina's Jelani Sarr with both of those matches scheduled not before 10:30 am.
Along with the Pack, participating teams will be UVA, Arizona, Auburn, South Carolina, Duke, Columbia, UNC, Wake Forest and Michigan State.
Spencer likes the field and the challenges those teams present early in the schedule.
"We want to challenge ourselves in any venue, in any competition with the best," Spencer said. "Certainly this tournament will provide that for us."
The format will be as follows: singles will be played best two out of three with full third sets. Doubles will be played as 8-game pro sets. Singles we will have Flights A, B, and C with each flight containing 16 players (C will not be full). Flights A & B will be played as compass draws and flight C will consist of two four-man round robins with a playoff at the end.
