
Volleyball Takes Down Rutgers in Five Set Thriller

RALEIGH – The NC State volleyball team won a thrilling five-set match against Rutgers Friday evening in Reynolds Coliseum at the Summit Hospitality Group Open.
In set one, the Pack went on a 7-0 run with junior Jada Allen behind the service line. Rutgers rallied back at the end to take the set 25-23.
Rutgers continued to build off the momentum from set one in set two, but the Pack found a weak spot in its defense, capitalizing on the Knights 11 errors. NC State took set two 25-21 and sophomore Ava Brizard led the team with five kills in the set.
Set three was a battle between the two and Rutgers came out on top after back-to-back service aces from Tina Grkovic ended the set with the Knights on top.
The fourth set brought a continued battle with neither team leading by more than four points throughout and NC State came out on top after a kill by Amanda Rice forced a fifth set.
Rutgers took a 5-0 lead to start the final set, forcing head coach Luka Slabe to take a timeout. The Wolfpack came out of the timeout hot and went on a 6-0 run to get back into the game. The two teams went back-and-forth until NC State reached match point and Rutgers called timeout. The Knights scored its 12th point but Amanda Rice recorded her 18th kill of the evening to end the match with the Pack on top, 3-2.
Rice led with 18 kills and added six blocks to the stats. Brizard recorded her second consecutive double-double after finishing with 16 kills and 15 digs. Kristen McDaniel had 34 assists for the Pack, while Madison Williams and Riley Shaak each had five blocks.

The Wolfpack will host Winthrop on Saturday Sept. 2 at 5pm for the final match of the Summit Hospitality Group Open. The match will be streamed on ACCNX.
