South Carolina Outlasts NC State 6-3 on Saturday Night

Wolfpack Faces Campbell in Elimination Game at Noon on Sunday
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The NC State baseball team fell 6-3 to NCAA Columbia Regional host South Carolina on Saturday night at Founders Park.
With the loss, NC State will face Campbell in an elimination game on Sunday at noon. The winner of Sunday's game between the Wolfpack and Fighting Camels will advance to a Sunday night matchup against South Carolina at 6 p.m.
South Carolina (41-19) struck first behind Braylen Wimmer's two-run homer in the top of the third inning. Wimmer recorded the Gamecocks first hit of the game to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead.
The Gamecocks extended their lead to 6-0 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. South Carolina scored all four of its runs with two outs in the inning, plating its first run of the inning with a bases-loaded walk before back-to-back singles stretched the Gamecocks' lead to six.
Wolfpack starting pitcher Matt Willadsen (5-5) tossed 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits. Willadsen struck out seven batters while allowing four runs in the third NCAA Tournament start of his career.
The Wolfpack (36-20) sliced South Carolina's lead in half in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all three of its runs with two outs to make it a 6-3 game. Jacob Cozart singled to right field to get NC State on the board before Chase Nixon ripped a two-out, two-RBI double to the wall in left center to make it a three-run contest.
Freshman Andrew Shaffner delivered a strong relief appearance in his NCAA Tournament debut, tossing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. After LuJames Groover III and Cozart combined for a 5-2 putout to retire Talmadge LeCroy at home with one out in the seventh, left-hander John Miralia struck out Dylan Brewer looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the top of the seventh.
Kalae Harrison and Payton Green smacked back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. South Carolina reliever Eli Jones then ended the Wolfpack threat with a 6-4-3 ground-ball double play to end the seventh inning.
Jacob Halford tossed two hitless frames of his own, finishing with three strikeouts. The trio of Shaffner, Miralia and Halford combined to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.
The Wolfpack put runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, including bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. South Carolina reliever Chris Veach induced a lineout to center field to record the save and seal the win for the Gamecocks.
