RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State men's basketball head coach Kevin Keatts announced Tuesday that the Pack has added Michael O'Connell to the program. O'Connell comes to NC State from Stanford and has two years of eligibility remaining.
"I'm excited to add Michael to our program," Keatts said. "Watching tape on him, I see a guy that is highly skilled and plays with a chip on his shoulder and is competitive. He is a selfless player that has shown time and time again that he is going to put the needs of the team ahead of his own. I think he is a great fit for our culture here and will be a great addition to our locker room."
O'Connell played at Stanford for the first three seasons of his college career. As a junior last season, he appeared in 33 games and made 28 starts for the Cardinal. He averaged 5.2 points, 3.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. He scored a career-best 22 points in Stanford's upset win over fourth-ranked Arizona on Feb. 11. He dished out a career-high 12 assists against Washington on Feb. 26.
He finished last season ranked 11th in the Pac-12 in assists and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio.
He closed his career at Stanford ranked 15th in program history with 285 assists and started 76 of his 89 career games with the Cardinal.
