LUBBOCK, Texas – NC State starting pitchers Matt Willadsen and Dominic Fritton were named to the 2023 College Baseball Foundation's Pitcher of the Year Watch List on Wednesday afternoon.
Willadsen and Fritton represent two of just 61 pitchers nationally named to the 2023 watch list and are two of only nine pitchers from the Atlantic Coast Conference honored on the list. NC State (two) and Wake Forest (three) are the only two ACC programs with multiple honorees.
Willadsen, a junior right-hander from Holly Springs, leads NC State's pitching staff with a 1.89 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 52.1 innings pitched. The right-hander has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start this season, sporting a 1.83 ERA and .205 batting average against him in 34.1 innings pitched in league action.
The Pack's leader in innings pitched helped NC State post a 10-0 shutout over then-No. 11 Louisville on April 1, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Willadsen tossed a season-high seven innings while allowing just three hits and one run against then-No. 14 Virginia on March 17, striking out nine Cavaliers during the stellar performance.
Fritton, a freshman left-hander from Fuquay-Varina, has limited opposing hitters to a .189 batting average on the season, which is the lowest mark on the Wolfpack pitching staff. The freshman has shined in his first season in Raleigh, leading all NC State pitchers with a 0.99 WHIP in 43.1 innings pitched.
Fritton has struck out 50 opposing hitters while allowing just 13 walks. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in the first Friday night start of his college career in a 14-3 win over Florida State this past weekend. Fritton has also limited opposing lineups to five hits or less in all nine of his appearances this season.
Fritton (17th) and Willadsen (10th) both rank inside the top 20 in ERA among qualifying Division I pitchers. Fritton's 2.08 ERA ranks second among all qualifying freshman pitchers in the nation.
The Pitcher of the Year Award will be presented later this year by the College Baseball Foundation. For more information on the Pitcher of the Year Award, visit the College Baseball Foundation website at www.collegebaseballhall.org.
