GREENSBORO, N.C. — NC State senior Nyls Korstanje was honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Swimming & Diving, as announced by the league Wednesday.Â
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in each respective sport, having maintained a minimum 3.0 career grade point average and at least a 3.0 over each of the previous two semesters while also competing in the highest level of competition.
Korstanje, a native of Nijmegen, Netherlands, receives the award following a stellar 2022-23 season with the Wolfpack. At the 2023 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, the 22x All-American earned the first NCAA Championship title of his career, contributing a key butterfly leg of the Pack's 200-yard medley relay. The relay's finishing time became the fastest in history with an NCAA record.Â
Additionally, Korstanje finished seventh in the nation in the 100-yard butterfly, ninth in the 50-yard freestyle, and 24th in the 100-yard freestyle at the National Championship meet, also contributing efforts to two other top-four finishing relays.
At the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, Korstanje qualified for finals in all three individual events, finishing third (100-yard butterfly), fifth (50-yard freestyle), and 11th (100-yard freestyle), respectively. Contributing major points to the Pack men's conference team title, Korstanje competed on three of NC State's relays, winning the Championship title in all three events.Â
Academically, Korstanje will graduate in May with a Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Materials and Technology. A two-time member of the Academic All-ACC team and one-time CSCAA Scholar All-American, the senior was also recently named as a recipient of the 2023 Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship awarded by the ACC.
