Calderaro, Synnott Qualify for NCAA Championships

KNOXVILLE, TENN. -- Nine Wolfpack divers wrapped up competition Wednesday at the NCAA Zone B Championships, highlighted by freshman Renato Calderaro and senior Helene Synnott earning their first-ever NCAA Championship qualification from their respective finishes on the 1-meter springboard.
Kicking off the week with a bang, Calderaro finished in sixth place in the men's 1-meter with 703.10 total combined points to secure his first NCAA Championship qualification. The Rome, Italy native posted a score of 354.80 in prelims (sixth place) and scored just under his prelims score in finals (348.30). Joining him in the final of the event, Bayne Bennett finished in 13th place overall (658.75) after scoring 348.35 points with his seventh place finish in prelims. Patrick O'Brien posted a score of 260.10 points to take 33rd from prelims.
Following Calderaro's lead, Synnott secured the first NCAA qualification of her career with her 11th place finish in the women's 1-meter event (552.90). Posting 288.30 points in prelims, Synnott entered finals (264.60) as the 14th seed. Ashton Zuburg joined her in finals, scoring 519.65 total points for 16th place (262.35 prelims, 257.30 finals). Clara Tate (242.15), Celia Bidwell (223.55), and Ren Watt (213.75) also competed in prelims of the event finishing in the 30th (Tate), 37th (Bidwell), and 43rd (Watt) places.
In the men's 3-meter springboard event, Calderaro squeaked into the last spot of the night's final with his 18th place finish in prelims (337.15), moving up to an 11th-place finish in the final (390.85/728). Bennett missed qualifying for the final, finishing one spot behind Calderaro for 19th (333.45).Â
On the women's side, Synnott, competiting in both prelims (289.35) and finals (300.70), finished 14th overall. Zuburg finished 31st (253.65) and Watt rounded out the field for the Pack, finishing with 215.40 points in 40th place.
Competing on the platform, O'Brien finished one spot away from finaling (19th) with 303.25 points, while Tate (199.55, 23rd) and Mary O'Neill (193.35, 25th) also competed in prelims on the women's side to close out the meet.
