RALEIGH – The Wolfpack softball team moved to 2-5 in ACC play after defeating Boston College in the first game of the series Friday afternoon.
The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead as the second batter in the lineup hit a homer to left field in the first. The Pack responded by getting back-to-back outs to end the top half of the inning.
Leadoff batter Rebecca Murray walked after facing five pitches to start the Pack's offensive efforts. Freshman Amanda Hasler stepped into the box with one out and faced seven pitches before drilling one over the center field wall. She recorded two RBI's on her sixth homer of the season to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Madison Inscoe picked up two strikeouts in the second to help keep the Eagles from scoring. Both teams remained scoreless through the second, but back to back errors by the Pack allowed the Eagles to tie the game in the top of the third.
NC State scored three in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to three. With two on base, sophomore Taylor Ensley reached on an error by the Eagles pitcher Susannah Anderson, allowing pinch runner Gabi Wilson to score. Freshman Nadia Sykes was then walked, loading the bases for Kaylee Lambrecht. She reached on an error by the Eagles shortstop, allowing MaKayla Marbury to score. Freshman outfielder Ellie Goins singled to third, bringing Ensley home and Sykes was out at third due to the look-back rule. Going back to the top of the lineup, Murray reached on a fielder's choice, but Lambrecht was out at third unassisted. NC State ended the fourth with a 5-2 lead over Boston College.
Boston College was unable to find a weak spot in the Pack's defense as they went scoreless through the sixth. The Wolfpack increased the lead to four with one out after Goins recorded an RBI double to bring Kaylee Lambrecht home. Boston College brought in a pitching change and walked Murray. Freshman Bailey Edwards entered the box as a pinch hitter and also walked. Hasler and Marbury were struck out by Halie Papion to bring up the final two outs of the inning.
Inscoe pitched her sixth full game and recorded five strikeouts on the afternoon. Goins led the team with two RBI's and two hits while Haislip added eight putouts and Hasler recorded five.
