Virginia Controls Pace; Knocks off Pack 63-50

NC State was limited to just two fast break points as it lost for just the second time in its last 10 games
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 22nd-ranked NC State men's basketball team fell to eighth-ranked Virginia, 63-50, Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The loss – just the Pack's second in it last 10 games – dropped NC State's record to 19-6, 9-5 in the ACC while Virginia improves to 18-4, 10-3 in the ACC.
Terquavion Smith led the Pack with 19 points and Casey Morsell chipped in 18, the most in his career against an ACC opponent.
DJ Burns finished with eight points, snapping a nine-game streak for Burns in double figures.
Jarkel Joiner added five points and a game-high tying six assists as only four NC State players scored for the Pack.
Greg Gantt and Ebenezer Dowuona did not score in the game, but Gantt had a game-high nine rebounds and Dowuona blocked a season-high five shots.
The Cavaliers shot 52 percent from the field in the opening 20 minute to take a 34-20 lead into the break.
NC State shot just 25.8 percent in the first half as the Pack scored just 20 points, its fewest in a half this season.
Virginia scored the first six points of the second half to stretch its lead to 20, the largest deficit NC State has faced this season, but the Pack had a charge left in them as a Burns jumped with 7:17 to go brought NC State within nine, 51-42.
But the Pack could get no closer.
Virginia outscored NC State in points in the paint, 32-12. The 12 points in the paint were a season-low for NC State as were the Pack's two fast break points.
Jayden Gardner led Virginia with 18 points.
NC State is back in action Saturday when it plays at Boston College. Tipoff at the Conte Forum is scheduled for noon and the game will be televised on Regional Sports Networks (Bally Sports South in North Carolina).
