LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NC State baseball head coach Elliott Avent was inducted into the New Mexico State Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday evening.
Avent, who enters his 27th season with the Wolfpack, served as the head coach of the New Mexico State baseball program for eight seasons (1989-96) before returning to Raleigh to take over the NC State baseball program. In Las Cruces, Avent compiled an overall record of 224-213 (.512) and departed as the program's second-winningest coach.
Avent's 74 victories over his first two seasons in Las Cruces marked the most wins of any New Mexico State head coach during their initial two years. He led the Aggies to their first 40-win season in his second season at the helm, finishing the year with a 40-19 record.
Avent still remains the third-longest tenured head coach in NM State history and led the Aggies to 20 or more wins in each of his eight seasons as the program's leader. He is also one of just three coaches to complete their tenure with the program with a winning percentage of greater than .500. He led the Aggies to a pair of wins during a three-game series against No. 1 Cal State Fullerton in his final season with the program.
While in Las Cruces, Avent coached a pair of Aggies who eventually played in the major leagues (Mark Acre and Jason Rakers) and also instructed 17 student-athletes who went on to sign professional contracts.
Avent's Wolfpack squad was predicted third in the ACC's Atlantic Division on Thursday, according to the league's 2023 Preseason Poll. The Pack garnered 58 total points and one first-place vote in the Atlantic Division in the preseason poll.
NC State welcomes 10 freshmen and seven transfers to its 2023 squad. The Wolfpack also returns key pieces from its 2022 roster, including 2022 Second Team All-ACC honoree LuJames Groover III and 2022 Preseason All-American pitcher Sam Highfill.
NC State baseball reserved season tickets are sold out, but limited standing room only season tickets still remain. Single game and mini-pack options also remain available.
The Pack's season opener is on Friday, Feb. 17, against Wagner. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
