Joiner tied his season-high for the second consecutive game with 29 points
RALEIGH – With the 1983 National Championship team looking on, the #RV/24th-ranked NC State men's basketball team raced past in-state foe, Wake Forest, 90-74, Wednesday evening inside PNC Arena.
The 1983 team picked Wednesday night for its reunion because it allowed every member the opportunity to attend and the group was not disappointed as Jarkel Joiner and DJ Burns combined for 50 points in the Pack win.
With the win, NC State improves to 22-7, 12-6 in the ACC while Wake Forest falls to 17-11, 9-8 in the ACC. The win also gave the Pack a season sweep of the Demon Deacons. It's the third time in the last four season NC State has swept Wake Forest.
Joiner led the way for the Wolfpack with his second-straight 29-point performance, while Burns added 21 points. The duo combined to shoot 64.5 percent (20-of-31) from the field.
Terquavion Smith and Casey Morsell also reached double figures with Smith finishing with 13 points and Morsell adding 10.
Smith added a team-high tying five rebounds and a team-best three assists.
A fast-paced affair saw both offenses get moving quickly, with Wake Forest making 11 of its first 12 shots and NC State opening the game on an 8-for-10 spurt.
After the Deacons used a quick 5-0 run to grab an early 9-4 edge, Wake led the Wolfpack for the first 10:55 of play with its lead growing to as many as six points after a Damari Monsanto three-pointer gave the Deacons a 20-14 advantage.
The Pack moved in front for the first time of the evening with 9:05 left in the first half after a 9-3 run capped by a Joiner fastbreak layup gave NC State a 29-28 lead. After a Bobi Klintman three-pointer pushed Wake back ahead at 31-29, the Pack sparked yet another run to counter. A 10-2 run from the Wolfpack that concluded with a lob from Joiner that Jack Clark flushed gave NC State a 39-33 edge, its largest to that point and forced Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes into a timeout.
The Demon Deacons fought their way back to a tie at 41-41, but never regained a lead over the remainder of the contest.
Despite a strong close to the half from Wake, the Pack ended the first half on an 8-3 run that closed with a steal-and-score from Casey Morsell with less than a second remaining to secure a 52-46 lead at halftime.
The 52 first-half points scored by NC State is the second-most in any half this season for the Wolfpack, with the 57-point opening frame against FIU on Nov. 15 the only higher-scoring performance.
After the Demon Deacons opened the second half with a Tyree Appleby jumper to cut NC State's lead to four points, a quick five-point run from the Pack minimized any threat from Wake Forest as the Deacons never brought the score within fewer than six points beyond that. Led by a strong defensive effort that limited Wake to just 28 points in the second frame, the Wolfpack stretched its lead to as many as 18 points in the final 20 minutes of play en route to a comfortable win in the second leg of its three-game homestand.
The Pack is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25 for a Senior Day tilt against conference-rival Clemson. The Tigers enter Saturday's contest with a 20-8 record and a 12-5 mark in ACC play, currently sitting at fourth place in the league. Saturday's game is slated for a 12 p.m. tip-off in PNC Arena and will be broadcast on Regional Sports Networks (RSN) alongside Gary Hahn and Tony Haynes' radio call on 101.5 in Raleigh.
