Salas Qualifies in Both Air Rifle and Smallbore
INDIANAPOLIS – NC State's Ben Salas will represent the Wolfpack rifle program at the NCAA Rifle Championships as an individual qualifier, as announced by the NCAA on Monday afternoon.
Hosted by Akron, the championships will be held March 10-11 on campus at James A. Rhodes Arena, in Akron, Ohio.
Salas qualified as an individual in both air rifle and smallbore, posting a smallbore score of 589 and an air rifle score of 596 at Saturday's NCAA Qualifying match in Annapolis, Maryland. He was one of four individual qualifiers for smallbore and one of seven individual qualifiers for air rifle.
Salas, who has already set two program records so far this season, will be the first member of the NC State rifle team to represent the Pack at the NCAA Championships since Makenzie Sheffield qualified in both 2021 and 2020. Salas set a new individual aggregate record with a score of 1,188 against The Citadel on Nov. 11. He then broke the NC State smallbore record on Jan. 28 with a score of 592.
The junior averaged a team-best 586 in smallbore and 591.78 in air rifle for an average individual aggregate score of 1,177.78. Salas' smallbore average ranks 21st nationally.
Individual and team competitions in smallbore will be held Friday, March 10, and individual and team competitions in air rifle will be held Saturday, March 11.
Salas and the Wolfpack will compete as a team one final time this season when the Pack travels to Morgantown, West Virginia, for the GARC Championships. NC State will compete in smallbore on Saturday before finishing the postseason with air rifle on Sunday.
