RALEIGH, N.C. – Two breakout innings at the plate and shutdown pitching propelled NC State's baseball team to a 9-0 shutout victory over Wagner on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park. The win secured the Pack's first sweep of the 2023 season and marked back-to-back seasons with a shutout to cap off a 3-0 start to the year.
NC State (3-0) allowed just three runs in the weekend sweep of the Seahawks (0-3), outscoring Wagner 26-3 over the three-game series. The Pack's three runs allowed over its first three games is its lowest total since limiting Delaware State to five runs in three games to open the 2006 season. The Pack's three runs allowed against Wagner on Opening Weekend also marks a new low during head coach Elliott Avent's head coaching career at NC State.
The Wolfpack struck first with three runs in the third inning. Trevor Candelaria again sparked the NC State offense, doubling down the left-field line to plate Will Marcy and Noah Soles for a 2-0 lead. Jacob Cozart then raced home from third base on a passed ball to stretch the Pack's advantage to 3-0.
Carter Trice and Parker Nolan opened the sixth inning with back-to-back solo home runs to left field, making it 5-0 quickly in the sixth frame. The Wolfpack batted around in the sixth, extending its lead to 8-0 before Wagner recorded all three outs. Payton Green knocked in a run for the third straight game to make it 6-0 before Cozart striped a ground-rule double down the right-field line to make it 8-0 Wolfpack.
Marcy brought home NC State's final run of the weekend with a bases-loaded walk, taking a 3-2 pitch to earn the RBI in the seventh inning.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Dominic Fritton earned his first-career start in Sunday's victory, tossing 4.1 shutout innings while allowing just one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Baker Nelson, Carson Kelly and freshman Andrew Shaffner then completed the shutout, allowing just two hits over the final 4.2 innings.
Nelson earned the pitching victory for the second straight game, moving to 2-0 on the season. Kelly pitched two hitless innings in relief, allowing just one baserunner with a strikeout. Shaffner also made his NC State debut, recording the final three outs with a pair of strikeouts.
Marcy finished with a team-high two hits, while Candelaria and Cozart tied with a team-high two RBI. Freshmen Michael Gupton, Matt Heavner, Cannon Peebles and Isaiah Barkett also entered Sunday's matchup in the final few innings.
The Pack has recorded a three-game sweep to open its season for the fourth straight time (2023, 2022, 2020 and 2019).
UP NEXT
NC State will hit the road for the first time in 2023 when the Pack travels to Conway, South Carolina, for a midweek matchup at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday. First pitch at Brooks Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
