Pack finds the win column in game one
RALEIGH – The NC State softball team split day two of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge -- after winning game one of the afternoon, NC State fell in game two.
NC State 3, Iowa 1 (8 inn.)
As the third batter in the Pack's lineup and two outs on the board, graduate Katlyn Pavlick slammed a ball past the center field wall to record her first home run. She put the Wolfpack on the board 1-0.
Iowa attempted to get on the board, but was unable to find a weak spot in the Pack defense. Sophomore Hannah Goodwin grabbed the first out in the bottom of the first with a diving catch over the foul line.
Goodwin continued to dominate in the box as she recorded her first multi-hit game wearing a Wolfpack jersey. She finished game one of the afternoon with two hits.
The two teams entered the seventh inning all tied up, 1-1. The Pack had four batters step up to the plate in the top of the inning, with Goodwin being hit by a pitch and the only one to reach base.
The Hawkeye's finished the seventh with one left on base and totaled nine hits on the afternoon. Due to neither team taking the lead in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.
To open the eighth inning, the Pack brought in two pinch hitters, both who got out on the catch. Rebecca Murray stepped up to the plate and singled to left field to get on base. She then stole second and MaKayla Marbury walked. Pavlick stepped up to the plate for her third at bat of the afternoon. She walked after reaching a full count and Madison Inscoe stepped up to the plate with bases loaded.
The freshman pitcher, who recorded her second start of the season in the circle, drilled a ball down the left line to bring Murray and Marbury across home. The Pack finished the top of the eighth with a 3-1 lead over the Hawkeyes.
Inscoe finished her afternoon in the circle with two strikeouts and recorded one hit with two RBI's from the plate.
The win snapped a six-game losing-streak for the Wolfpack and recorded the teams first win of the year.
NC State 0, Purdue 4
The Pack looked to build off the momentum from the first game of the afternoon.
The two teams went scoreless through the first, but the Boilermakers scored three in the top of the second.
In the top of the third, Anna Lonchar hit a solo home run to put the Boilermakers up 4-0.
Kaylee Lambrecht recorded the Pack's lone hit in game two in the bottom of the second when she doubled down the left line.
Redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann struck out four batters in her two innings in the circle. Freshman Rylee Wyman pitched the final four innings and recorded two strikeouts.
