PHILADELPHIA – Wolfpack women's basketball junior Diamond Johnson is one of 14 players featured on the late season watch list for the 2023 Dawn Staley Award, as announced by The Phoenix Club of Philadelphia on Monday afternoon.
The annual honor is given to a player who exemplifies the skills that Coach Staley possessed during her playing career (ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win). It marks Johnson's second season in a row being named to the award's watch list.
Staley's fellow Philadelphia native, Johnson averages a team-best 12.8 points per game and also leads the Wolfpack with 3.6 assists per game for the best such average of her collegiate career. She is shooting 43 percent (101-of-235) overall and 37.9 percent (47-of-124) from distance through 21 games played in 2022-23.
Johnson has scored 10+ points in a team-leading 15 outings this season, highlighted by 22 points at No. 10 Iowa and 20 points against No. 7 Notre Dame. On the playmaking front, the Pack's starting guard dished out a season-high seven assists in the Pack's November win over Vanderbilt and has 3+ assists in all but six contests she's played in this season.
Johnson is just seven points away from reaching the 1,000 point milestone with 993 on her three-season, 76-game career. In total, she averages 11.5 points and 2.6 assists on her career.
The Phoenix Club of Philadelphia will announce four finalists for the 2023 Dawn Staley Award in mid-March, and the winner will be announced the weekend of the Final Four.
