CARY, N.C. – Pack Pro and Philadelphia Phillies' standout Trea Turner was named the 2023 Richard W. "Dick" Case Award winner, as announced by USA Baseball on Tuesday afternoon. The award honors the organization's athlete of the year annually.
Turner led Team USA to the World Baseball Classic final in March, batting .391 with a tournament-best five home runs and 11 RBI. The former NC State shortstop was named to the WBC All-Tournament Team after hitting four home runs over the competition's final three games as Team USA secured a silver medal.
Turner consistently came in clutch for Team USA at the WBC, hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to help Team USA advance past Venezuela in the quarterfinals. He then homered twice in Team USA's semifinal victory over Cuba, becoming the first player in tournament history to record four RBI or more in back-to-back games. Turner's hot streak continued into the championship game, smacking his fifth homer of the tournament to tie a WBC record.
In addition to his World Baseball Classic success, Turner finished his first regular season with the Philadelphia Phillies batting .266 with 26 homers, 76 RBI and 30 stolen bases. He batted .347 with three homers, five RBI and four stolen bases in the postseason, helping lead the Phillies to the National League Championship Series.
