RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State baseball alumni Trea Turner and Aaron Bates will represent the Wolfpack in the 2023 MLB Postseason beginning on Tuesday.
Turner, who just completed his first season in Philadelphia, helped lead the Phillies to a 90-72 record for the top National League Wild Card spot. Turner finished the regular season batting .266 with 26 homers, 76 RBI, five triples and 35 doubles. He also stole 30 bases without getting caught stealing one time the entire season. In his past 30 games, Turner has batted .325 with 11 homers, 27 RBI, eight stolen bases and a 1.066 OPS.
The Phillies open their three-game wild card series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at 8:08 p.m. on ESPN. All three games (third game if necessary) will be scheduled for 8:08 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. With a win in the wild card series, Turner's Phillies would advance to play the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series with the first game slated for Saturday.
Bates, who was promoted to co-hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers in December, enters the postseason with the Dodgers after his squad won the National League West with a 100-62 record. The Dodgers earned a bye to the National League Division Series with the second-best record in the NL. They will face the winner of the NL Wild Card matchup between Milwaukee and Arizona beginning on Saturday.
Bates transferred to NC State prior to the 2005 season from San Jose State. He earned Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America Third Team All-America honors after a stellar 2005 season, ranking second in NC State single season history with a .425 batting average during his first season in Raleigh.
The Wolfpack finished the 2023 season with five former players making MLB appearances, including San Francisco's Patrick Bailey and Colorado's Evan Justice making their Major League debuts this season. Carlos Rodon also completed his first season with the New York Yankees, while Andrew Knizner wrapped up his fifth year with the St. Louis Cardinals.
