ST. LOUIS – Former NC State baseball catcher Patrick Bailey was named a 2023 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award Finalist on Wednesday afternoon.
Bailey, who was drafted No. 13 overall by the San Francisco Giants in the 2020 MLB Draft, made his Major League debut on May 19 and made an immediate impact for the Giants. The Greensboro native caught 25 opposing baserunners stealing, throwing out 28% of would-be base stealers in his rookie season behind the plate. Bailey's caught stealing percentage of 28% was 9% higher than the league average rate of 19%.
Per Statcast, Bailey led all MLB catchers in strike rate and catcher framing runs. He also ranked second in the National League in average pop time and defensive runs saved. He became the first Giants' catcher to record the final out of multiple contests since 1979, throwing out a runner on the basepaths twice to seal a victory.
Bailey played in 97 total games for the Giants during his rookie season. The former Wolfpack catcher batted .233 with 18 doubles, seven home runs, 48 RBI and a triple in his first season in a Giants' uniform.
The winners of the 2023 Gold Glove Awards will be announced on ESPN's Baseball Tonight on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. ET. Philadelphia's J.T. Realmuto and Arizona's Gabriel Moreno join Bailey as the three finalists in the National League.
About the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards
To determine the winners of the 18 defensive position Awards, each team's manager and up to six coaches on his staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their League and cannot vote for players from their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added the SABR Defensive Index™ (SDI) to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, which comprises approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the managers' and coaches' votes continuing to carry the majority.
To identify the utility Award winners, Rawlings collaborated with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award position winners. Utilizing the SABR formula and additional defensive statistics, Rawlings will select one utility winner from each League.
