RALEIGH So much for any rust coming off the winter break.
Â
For the first time since December 20,the NC State wrestling team was in action and the Pack was in midseason form, dominating Binghamton, 36-3 in front of 1,750 fans inside of Reynolds Coliseum.
Â
With the win, NC State improves to 9-0 on the season as they gear up for ACC competition. The Pack will have one more pre-conference warm up, hosting Army next Friday, before jumping into league action.
Â
If the Bearcats were the next to last quiz, NC State looks more than ready for the conference test.
Â
The Pack dropped the first match of the night when Micah Roes defeated No. 24 Jarrett Trombley, 3-1. NC State won the final nine matches of the night, including three major decisions and two pin falls.
Â
The Pack is now 4-0 all-time versus Binghamton, the school where Pat Popolizio coached from 2007-12.
Â
NC State went 2-0 in head-to-head matchups of ranked opponents on Friday. In the 184-pound class, No. 3 Trent Hidlay shook off his first loss of the season (in New Orleans) and defeated No. 23 Jacob Nolan, 13-3. The Lewistown, Pa. native was never in serious jeopardy, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after one. Hidlay (13-1) piled it on from then on, scoring on takedown after takedown in the final two periods.
Â
In the heavyweight division, No. 13 Owen Trephan took on No. 21 Cory Day. Trephan, who has been on a tear lately, won his third straight match, picking up an 11-0 win.
Â
While the Pack remained in control after the opening bout, there was some drama in the middle classes. In the 174-pound class, Alex Faison found himself down 2-0 to Sam DePrez in the first period. DePrez led 3-2 late in the second, but Faison rallied to tie the match at three heading into the final period.
Â
Faison had a late flurry in the third to win 7-3. In the 165 class, Derek Fields led by one (4-3) in the third period, before getting a huge, momentum shifting two-point takedown over Dimitri Gamkrelidze. Fields would pull away in the third for a 6-4 win.
Â
No. 10 Ed Scott and No. 7 Isaac Trumble each picked up pin falls for the Wolfpack. Scott's pin gave the Pack a 16-2 advantage halfway through the match. Trumble picked up his sixth fall of the season when he pinned Cayden Bevis with four seconds remaining in the match.Â
