
Wolfpack women earn a first-place finish at Joe Piane Invitational

The NC State women's cross country team, led by sophomore Katelyn Tuohy, got off to a hot start at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday morning in South Bend, Ind.
The Wolfpack women's team got the day going with a first-place finish in the Women's Blue 5000m, thanks in large part to Tuohy's first-place finish. NC State (55 points) finished ahead of New Mexico (68) and Alabama (70) in the event. It was the first race for the Wolfpack since the Adidas XC Challenge on September 16 in Cary.
The NC State women's cross country team finished with three runners in the top 15. The leader of the Pack was Tuohy, who crossed the finish line at 15:50, ahead of Alabama's Mercy Chelangat. Tuohy's teammates Samatha Bush (16:11.7) finished fifth and Sydney Seymour (16:11.9) finished sixth. Marlee Starliper was just outside the top 10, coming in 12th with a time of 16:21.9.
Ian Shanklin was NC State's top finisher in the men's Blue 5 mile, finishing seventh with a time of 23:25.2. As a team, the Pack finished ninth overall. Brett Gardner (23:51.0) and David Vorbach (24:08.1) rounded out N.C. State runners in the top 50, finishing 21st and 43rd, respectively.
Shannon Sefton finished eighth in the women's open 5000m, with a time of 17:13.2.
In the men's open five mile, Matthew Bogdan (25:12.9) finished 30th.
