RALEIGH – The NC State Athletic Department is saddened to hear of the recent passing of NC State swimming and diving alumnus and friend of the program Eddy Houchin.
Houchin was a member of the Wolfpack squad from 1974-75 through 1977-78. He was a six-time relay All-American and won a total of 12 ACC titles (eight individual, four relay) during his four-year NC State career. He was perfect in the 200-yard individual medley at the conference meet, making him one of just five men in the team's history to be a four-time ACC champion in an event. In 2002, Houchin was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Men's Swimming and Diving Team honoring the top 50 athletes in the sport since the conference's inception.
The Wolfpack men's swimming and diving squad won ACC team titles during all four of Houchin's seasons in Raleigh.
"The Wolfpack family is saddened by the recent passing of Eddy," said current NC State head coach Braden Holloway. "He attended every home meet for our Pack and never missed a summer league meet for his grandchildren. When I first came to Raleigh in 2011, Eddy took me out for some coffee, and we just talked NC State swimming and diving. His passion for our program could not have been more evident, and he was also a great ambassador for the university as a whole and for his family. We will all miss him and will honor him as best we can as part of this program."
Following his collegiate career, Houchin remained a loyal supporter to NC State swimming and diving as one of the program's biggest fans. He enjoyed volunteering as an official for Wolfpack home meets and maintained close relationships with fellow NC State swimming and diving alumni who were some of his closest friends throughout his life. His wife, Jane, was also an All-American swimmer for the Pack in the 1970s, and Houchin's daughter-in-law, Mallory, was a member of Holloway's coaching staff from 2011 through 2018.
A memorial service celebrating Eddy's life will be held on Saturday, August 13 at Providence Church (6339 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh).
