IRVINE, Calif. – NC State distance swimmer Will Gallant broke the 15-minute barrier for the first time in his career as he claimed gold in the 1,500-meter freestyle race at the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships.
Gallant, a rising junior for the Pack, touched in a personal-best time of 14:57.08 to take home the win. The mark was over 13 seconds off of his entry time (15:11.79) and marked the third-fastest swim by any American swimmer this year.
"It's a very good group (to train with)," said Gallant of his NC State teammates. "Ross Dant, James Plage and Owen Lloyd are with me every day. It gets competitve in practice, but we're always there battling it out. (Coaches) Mark (Bernardino) and Dan (Kalupski) write some good practices to prepare you for the 1500, the longest event in the pool. I've really had a good time, and it's a great fit for me. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
A native of Collinsville, Conn., Gallant just wrapped up his first season at NC State after transferring fro Indiana. He was an All-American in the 1,650-yard freestyle after placing third at the 2022 NCAA Championships, and that result came after he won the ACC title in the same event earlier in the season.
