TEMPE, Ariz. – The 2022 NC State women's tennis team tied the best season-ending national ranking in team history as it was tabbed No. 6 in the final ITA Division I Team Rankings of the year. The Wolfpack has finished as the nation's sixth-ranked team in back-to-back seasons.
The team's ranking follows the Pack's run to the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA Championships. After reaching the Final Four in 2021, NC State followed up by advancing to just the second Elite Eight appearance in team history this season. Prior to these past two years, NC State had never advanced past the Round of 16.
NC State went 26-6 on the season, with those 26 victories ranking as the most in a single season in team history. The previous single-season win mark stood at 24, which was set in 2019. The Pack secured a top-eight seed for the 2022 NCAA Championships and earned the right to host a super regional for the first time in team history.
In total, the Wolfpack defeated 10 top-25 opponents and 16 nationally-ranked teams in its 32 matches. The team took down Georgia and Texas within an eight-day span in February, with both squads being ranked third at the time of competition. Those victories tied the program mark for highest ranked win and both occured away from home.
The squad also hit a multitude of program firsts in 2022. NC State started the season with a 10-0 record, the best season-opening mark in program history. The team also went 7-0 to begin ACC play, beating the previous program record of 4-0 set in 1998. Earlier in the 2022 campaign, the Wolfpack reached the semifinal at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the team's best run in that national tournament.
NC State reached the 10-win mark in ACC play for the third season in a row, tying for third place in the best and most competitive league in the nation.
The Pack has enjoyed tremendous success under the leadership of head coach Simon Earnshaw, who became the winningest coach in program history this season. His current mark is at 150 wins with NC State, surpassing the previous record of 138.
NC State also finished seventh in the Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25 poll.
Final singles and doubles rankings will be released on Thursday, June 2. The Wolfpack also awaits the official announcement of conference and national honors following the conclusion of this week's NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
