Wolfpack senior is only ACC player on the list
LOS ANGELES – For the third season in a row, NC State women's basketball center Elissa Cunane is one of 15 collegiate players selected for the 2022 Women's National Ballot for the John R. Wooden Award, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolfpack senior is the only Atlantic Coast Conference player featured on the list.
The National Ballot consists of student-athletes who are candidates for the Wooden Award All-American Team and the Wooden Award Trophy that recognizes college basketball's Player of the Year. Cunane is also in consideration for multiple other national honors, which includes being a late season candidate for Naismith Player of the Year and the Wade Trophy and a Top 10 finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award.
A Consensus First Team All-ACC honoree each of the last three seasons, Cunane continues to cement herself as one of the nation's top players. She plays a key role as the centerpiece to the Pack's four-out, one-in system that has put together a 28-3 record, won the regular-season ACC title for the first time in 32 years and reached the ACC Tournament championship game for the third season in a row.
Cunane averages a team-leading 13.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 52.8 percent (159-of-285) shooting. She puts up those numbers while averaging just 25.3 minutes per game.
The Summerfield, N.C., native has scored in double figures in a team-leading 24 outings, with five 20+ point games and eight double-doubles on the year. She has shot 50+ percent from the floor in a total of 22 games, with her best percentage being an 88.9 percent performance (8-of-9) against Maryland in November.
The Wolfpack senior most recently opened 2022 ACC Tournament action with a 15-point performance to help lead the Pack past the Florida State Seminoles. She then followed up with the first ACC Tournament double-double of her career with a team-leading 20 points and 13 rebounds in the team's Saturday semifinal victory over Virginia Tech. Cunane has scored in double figures in every ACC Tournament game of her career and was named ACC Tournament MVP last season.
Voters will cast their ballots from March 15 to March 22, taking into consideration a player's entire season of play as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2022 Wooden Award presented by Wendy's will be announced on March 30.
