NC State Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan has been named a winner of the prestigious Cushman & Wakefield Athletics Director of the Year Award (ADOY), it was announced today. Corrigan was one of four recipients in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) category, joined by John Currie of Wake Forest, Hunter Yurachek of Arkansas and Mike Bohn of the University of Southern California.Â
Corrigan is in his third year guiding NC State Athletics and has led the Wolfpack through a time of remarkable achievement. NC State posted numerous highs under his leadership in 2021, including the women's cross country team claiming the NCAA title, the first women's NCAA title of any kind in school history and first national title overall by a Wolfpack team in 38 years.Â
NC State reached the College World Series in baseball, advanced the Final Four in women's tennis for the first time in program history and posted the school's second-highest finish in school history in the Learfield Directors' Cup. Additionally, NC State student-athletes thrived in the classroom, posting the two highest single term grade point averages during the 2020-21 academic year.Â
NC State has since announced its ambitious plans for a $15 million renovation to Doak Field at Dail Park, capitalizing on the success and popularity of its baseball program.Â
"Boo Corrigan is the most outstanding leader I've ever been in a room with," said former NC State student-athlete Peyton Barish, "There is no one I am more willing to jump into the foxhole for than my athletic director. The impact that he has had on me is immeasurable, and he represents all that a collegiate athletic director should strive to be."Â
Corrigan began his term on the College Football Playoff Committee in 2021 and earlier this year was appointed for a two-year term as the Chair of the Committee beginning this upcoming season.Â
He has guided NC State through the financial challenges of COVID-19. In a year in which NC State projected to lose $22.8 million, the program balanced its budget for 2020-21, among the short list of schools that assumed no debt moving forward. Â
The Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year Award spans has 28 winners over seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Winners will be recognized in conjunction with the 57th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, prior to the Featured Session on Tuesday, June 28 at 4 p.m.
The ADOY Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.Â
"As the intercollegiate athletics enterprise continues to evolve and institutions and their departments journey bravely into uncharted waters, we have a new wave of leaders who have answered the call," said Bob Vecchione, NACDA Chief Executive Officer. "This year, 22 of our 28 Athletics Director of the Year honorees are being recognized with the award for the first time in their careers. Additionally, in the year that we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, we are proud that all four ADOY winners at the Division III level are women. Thank you to our new title sponsor Cushman & Wakefield, for helping the NACDA family applaud the efforts of these athletics directors across the country. We are looking forward to gathering together in person once again to celebrate their achievements during Convention this summer."
Cushman & Wakefield is in its first year of sponsoring the award. The ADOY Award program is in its 24th year and has recognized a total of 535 deserving athletics directors to date.
All NACDA-member directors of athletics in the United States, Canada and Mexico who met the criteria were eligible for the award. Among the criteria were service as an AD for a minimum of five academic years; demonstration of commitment to higher education and student-athletes; continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence; and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to high levels of accomplishments. Additionally, each AD's institution must have passed a compliance check through its appropriate governing body (i.e., NCAA, NAIA, etc.), in which the institution could not have been on probation or cited for a lack of institutional control during the tenure of the current athletics director.
Nominators were NACDA-member directors of athletics, institutional presidents and conference commissioners, as well as other respected intercollegiate athletics administrators. Special Divisional Selection Committees composed of current and former directors of athletics, current and former commissioners and other key athletics administrators voted on nominees for the award.
