SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore guard Diamond Johnson of the NC State women's basketball team has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2022 Nancy Lieberman Award, which is an annual honor that recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I basketball.
Wolfpack fans are encouraged to participate in this year's Fan Voting, which opens on Friday, Feb. 11. The top five player selections based on the fan vote will receive an additional vote towards making the next round. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Lieberman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
Since transferring to NC State prior to the start of the 2021-22 campaign, Johnson has made an impact on a stacked Wolfpack squad that has been ranked in the national top five for the entirety of the season and compiled a 20-3 (11-1 ACC) record. Johnson was also one of 10 finalists for the award last season.
The Philadelphia native is averaging 11.4 points and 2.5 assists per game after playing in all 23 outings. Johnson has compiled a 41.4 percent overall shooting mark (104-of-251) and also shoots 38.1 percent (40-of-105) from long range. She leads the team with her 1.7 threes per game and has hit three or more triples in six contests this season. Johnson's assist average ranks second on the team, and she leads the squad in steals with 34 total and 1.5 per game.
In total, Johnson has posted 12 games with 10+ points, 10 games with 5+ rebounds, 13 games with 3+ assists and nine games with 2+ steals. Her highest scoring outing of the year was a 24-point game against Washington State in November. She now has eight 20+ point games on her career, and that scoring performance still stands as the highest by any member of the Wolfpack this year.
The winner of this season's Nancy Lieberman Award will be presented in April alongside the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. For more information on the award and to vote beginning Feb. 11, visit HoopHallAwards.com.
