Evans, Hernandez Invited to USA Women’s National Team Open Program

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Melissa Evans and Priscilla Hernandez of NC State volleyball have been invited to the USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Program on Feb. 25-27 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Formerly known as the Open Tryout, the Open Program is part of the selection process for the U.S Women's National Team, NCAA Elite Athlete List, and 2022 Collegiate National Team. Due to COVID concerns, spectators will not be allowed in the gym. Fans can watch the WNTOP online on Baller.TV.
Evans had a stellar final season with NC State as the Preseason All-ACC selection led the team with 369 kills, averaging 3.62 per set while hitting .249 on the year. Her 3.62 kills per set ranks seventh in the ACC.
Additionally, Evans finished the season with 156 digs (1.53 per set) and 50 total blocks that included seven solo denials. She recorded six double-doubles on the season which was the third-most on the team. Evans tallied three matches with 20 or more kills this season, highlighted by her career-high 25 kills in the five-set thriller win over Rutgers on Sept. 10.
Overall, the opposite racked up 24 games this season with double-digit kills, leading the team in kills in 14 games. On the road at Miami on Oct. 3, Evans recorded her 1,369th career kill to become the program's leader in kills in the rally scoring era.
In 2021, Hernandez played every set in all 30 matches, helping the Hurricanes reach the Second Round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. She finished her time at the U with 1,011 career digs, becoming the eighth player in Miami's school history to record 1,000 career digs.
The Miami, Fla., native finished last season with 420 digs to average 4.08 per set, good enough for third-highest in the ACC. Additionally, she recorded 15 or more digs in 13 matches highlighted by a career-high 29 digs in the match against Florida State on Oct. 6.
Hernandez is also a threat in serving as she tallied 28 aces in 2021. Following the end of the season, Hernandez was named to the All-ACC Second Team.
Head coach Luka Slabe was selected as an Official Staff for the Women's Open Program.
