#6 Pack Ends Historic ITA Indoors Run in Semifinals

MADISON, Wis. – Fifth-ranked NC State and second-ranked North Carolina put together an absolute thriller of a semifinal matchup at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, but the Tar Heels came out on top with a 4-1 score on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolfpack's loss was just its first of the season as NC State moves to 10-1 on the year. Its 10-game winning streak to start dual match play was its best start to a season in program history as the team played in its first-ever ITA Indoors semifinal.
With UNC's lead at 3-1, NC State battled in third sets on the three remaining singles courts where it looked to be anyone's match. The Wolfpack earned a couple of timely breaks across the board, but the Tar Heels held on needing just one match to clinch and got that decision on court six.
The Wolfpack lost the doubles point for the first time this season, but sophomore Abigail Rencheli put her team on the board with a straight-sets win over Elizabeth Scotty. She defeated the 27th-ranked Tar Heel by a 6-3, 6-2 score.
UNC added straight-sets wins on courts five and six to put itself just a match away from clinching ahead of the three tight third setters.
NC State now turns its attention to back-to-back road matches as it travels to take on Kansas (Friday, Feb. 18) and Texas (Sunday, Feb. 20).
