NC State went on a 17-0 run in the second half to break open the game
RALEIGH – The NC State men's basketball team picked up its first win of ACC play on Thursday night with a 76-64 defeat of Louisville.
The victory improved the Wolfpack to 11-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
For the second consecutive game, DJ Burns was the team's leading scorer finishing with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Burns was one of five members of the Wolfpack to finish in double figures as all five starters reached double figures.
Casey Morsell tallied 15 points, Terquavion Smith and Jack Clark each added 14, while Jarkel Joiner totaled 13. Clark led the Wolfpack in both rebounds and assists, compiling seven rebounds and passing out a game-high six assists.
Morsell hit five three-pointers and added six rebounds before fouling out.
After the Pack carried a 31-28 lead into the locker room for halftime, the Cardinals opened the second half with a layup to cut NC State's lead to one point. The Pack then responded by scoring 19 of the next 22 points going on a 17-0 spurt over less than four minutes of action during the run to break open the game. The run was highlighted by a trio of three-pointers from Smith and Morsell would add another three with 13:47 to play to give the Pack a 50-33 lead.
The Cardinals would never get within single digits the rest of the game.
NC State jumped out to an early lead after starting the game on a 5-0 run to which the Cardinals responded with a 9-0 spurt to counter.
After nearly ten minutes of back-and-forth buckets, the Pack took its first lead since 5-4 after the front leg of back-to-back three-pointers from Morsell gave NC State a 22-21 edge, after which Louisville would never lead.
The Pack are now 11-1 in games which it records and least 11 assists, 7-0 when making 10 or more three-pointers and 7-0 when forcing opponents into 16 or more turnovers.
With a seven-day holiday break now on deck, NC State will now shift its focus to a Friday, Dec. 30 matchup against Clemson. The Pack's final game of the 2022 portion of the schedule will be held in the Tigers' Littlejohn Coliseum with tipoff slated for 4 p.m. The game is set to be broadcast on the ACC Network.
