RALEIGH – The NC State women's tennis team has released its schedule for the 2023 dual match season, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw on Wednesday.
The full match schedule has been posted on GoPack.com, and times for each match will continue to be announced as soon as they are finalized. Home matches for the Wolfpack are held at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center and are free to attend.
Hitting new heights last season, the Wolfpack is poised to follow up with another solid spring this year. NC State is coming off its second-straight NCAA Championships quarterfinals berth after never advancing past the Round of 16 prior to 2021. The team tied its program-best final ranking of No. 6 and ended last year with a 26-6 record (10-3 ACC), with those 26 victories marking the most in a single season in team history.
NC State returns five players from the 2021-22 squad, including 2022 NCAA doubles champion Nell Miller and All-Americans Abigail Rencheli and Alana Smith. Sophie Abrams and Amelia Rajecki round out the Pack's returners. The squad also welcomes three newcomers – U.S. Junior Open doubles champion Diana Shnaider, NAU transfer Gina Dittmann and freshman Chloe Henderson.
HEARING FROM HEAD COACH:
"This is the toughest and most comprehensive schedule we've put together to date. The ACC continues to be the strongest conference in the nation and as usual we will be tested by each and every opponent. We face the always difficult trip to Miami & Florida St early on and then have UNC, Duke & Virginia in a row in April, all 3 finished the 2022 season in the top 5 nationally.
"To get things rolling at home we're hosting the ITA Kickoff weekend for the 4th straight season January 28-29 and will face Illinois in the first match followed by either Vanderbilt or Furman.
"Beyond the ACC schedule we're fortunate to be hosting the 2-time defending NCAA Champions Texas on April 10th and NCAA finalists Oklahoma on Feb 4th, both are going to be highly anticipated and exciting home matches for Wolfpack Nation! Add to that non-conference contests against top 25 opponents, Ohio St, Tennessee & UCF, plus the season opening road trip to play South Carolina and we will be challenged week in and week out throughout the spring.
"We look forward to seeing everyone again this spring at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center for what will be many very fun match-ups at the highest level of Women's College Tennis. Go Pack!!"
SCHEDULE QUICK HITS:
The Triangle area prepares to set the scene for fiery competition, as the Pack will compete against the top-five teams in the nation from last year. It will host No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 5 Virginia in addition to visiting No. 3 UNC and No. 4 Duke.
Out of the 13 matches the Wolfpack will host on its home court, it is lined up to contest against nine opponents who finished last season ranked. Altogether, the Wolfpack will face 18 programs from the 2022 final rankings spanning non-conference and conference play in 2023.
To begin its home slate, NC State will host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend for the fourth consecutive year from Jan. 28-29.
RAKING IN THE RANKS:
NC State features three players in the singles top 25 – Alana Smith (No. 13), Amelia Rajecki (No. 23) and Abigail Rencheli (No. 25). The program is one of only three to boast at least three singles players in the top 25 of the rankings headed into the spring. Sophie Abrams (No. 97) also worked her way into the rankings after a successful fall campaign.
Rajecki and Nell Miller clinched the eighth-ranked spot in the nation for doubles, and Rencheli and Abrams checked in at No. 60.
