Korstanje and Stokowski to Bring Home Bronze Medals from FINA Worlds

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA -- The NC State Wolfpack saw several of its seven swimmers finish in the top-eight at the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships on days three and four of the six day competition.
The past two days of competition were highlighted by Nyls Korstanje and Kacper Stokowski earning bronze medals at the World Championship meet. Korstanje's came from his performance as a part of the Netherlands' third-place finish in the 4x50-meter freesytle relay and Stokowski brought home the bronze in the 50-meter backstroke.
50-METER BACKSTROKE
The past two days of competition were highlighted by Nyls Korstanje and Kacper Stokowski earning bronze medals at the World Championship meet. Korstanje's came from his performance as a part of the Netherlands' third-place finish in the 4x50-meter freesytle relay and Stokowski brought home the bronze in the 50-meter backstroke.
50-METER BACKSTROKE
- During prelims of the event, Stokowski set a new Championship record in the event, going 22.78 to take the top seed headed into semifinals. During the semifinal session of the event, the Polish Olympian broke the Polish National Record with his time of 22.74, finishing second. In the World Championship final, Stokowski finished in third place (22.74), earning the first medal of his senior-level career on the World stage.
- Representing Greece, Andreas Vazaios completed a double in the 200-meter butterfly and 100-meter individual medley during prelims. In his first event of the session, the 200-meter butterfly, Vazaios finished in 12th place with his time of 1:52.28 seconds. Not long after, his performance in the 100-meter individual medley qualified him as the 14th seed for the semifinal, where he finished fourth (51.47). In the final of the same event, Vazaios finished in sixth (51.80).
- NC State graduate student Andrea Podmanikova competed in the prelim heats of the 200-meter breaststroke. Representing Slovakia, Podmanikova posted a time of 2:24.12, good for 20th place.
- Sirena Rowe and David Curtiss each completed their last individual race of the meet for their respective nation in the shortest sprint race. Rowe finished just off of her best time in the event, putting her time of 25.19 on the board for 27th place. Curtiss went 21.40 to take 24th overall at the first senior-level international meet of his career.
- The Pack saw three of its current and former members compete in the Mixed 4x50 freestyle relay. Korstanje competed for the Netherlands (20.96 split, third place finish), Rowe anchored Colombia's relay (24.24, 14th place), and Curtiss split 20.89 for Team USA (fourth place).
- Korstanje's bronze medal moment came in the men's 4x50-meter freestyle relay, where his 20.84 split on the second leg help the Netherlands to their finishing time of 1:23.75. Curtiss led off the United States' fifth-place finishing relay with the fastest leadoff split in the field (21.16). On the women's side, Sophie Hansson anchored Sweden's relay (24.49) to secure the fourth place finish for the team.
- With two days of competition remaining, NC State will see individual performances from Vazaios (400 IM), Korstanje (100 fly), Hansson (50 breast), Podmanikova (50 breast), and Stokowski (200 back).
