No. 9 NC State opens 2022-23 season with win over App State

Hidlay, Trumble pick up pin falls as Pack dominates in opener
RALEIGH The No. 9 NC State wrestling team jumped on Appalachian State early and never looked back, defeating the Mountaineers 26-12 in the season opener.

Approximately, 2,2009 fans welcomed the four-time ACC champions back to Reynolds.

Those fans weren't disappointed in the performance, which included two pins by the homet eam.Â

The night started in the 141 pound class, as No. 21 Ryan Jack took on Heath Gonyer.
Â
Jack, the Wolfpack sophomore from Danbury, Conn. defeated Gonyer 9-2, helping NC State jump out to a 4-0 lead.Â

NC State freshman Jackson Arrington made his collegiate debut in the 149 class, battling Mountaineers' senior Jon Jon Millner, the No. 6 wrestler in the class, according to InterMat.

Millner started the match with a two-point takedown just moments into the first period and went up 3-0 with a takedown. The score stayed locked in at 3-0 heading into the final period and Millner pulled away for a 6-0 win, Apps first of the night.Â

No. 7 Ed Scott flipped the momentum back in NC State's favor, dominating App State's Cody Bond in the 157 class. Scott started the match with two takedowns in the first period and began the second with an escape. By that point, Scott was up 7-2. Scott added two more take takedowns in the final frame and an escape for the final score of 14-5.Â

App State took the 165 class when No. 14 Will Formato defeated NC State sophomore Don Cates, 3-2 in overtime. Tied at two heading into OT, the Mountaineers gained the decisive point when Cates was called for his second stall. That win pulled App within two, 8-6.

The tide turned back to red over the next few matches for NC State. In the 174 class, redshirt freshman Brock Delsignore defeated Will Miller, 12-8, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead in the first period.Â

Trent Hidlay (184) and Isaac Trumble (197) put on wrestling clinics in the next two matches. Hidlay, who recently won a silver medal at the U23 World Championships, went up 12-0 in the first period against Luke Uliano.Â
Â
Hidlay finished Uliano off, pinning him in the second period.

Trumble followed Hidlay's pin with one of his own, pinning Wyatt Miller in the first period.Â
Â
Owen Trephan defeated Jacob Sartorio in the heavyweight division, gaining a crucial takedown in the third period to gain separation.Â
Â
The Mountaineers won the final two matches of the day - 125 and 133 - to close the margin.

The 133 match, between NC State's Kai Orine and Apps Sean Carter, went down the wire as Carter gained a two-point takedown in overtime.Â
