RALEIGH – NC State women's basketball standouts Jakia Brown-Turner and Diamond Johnson have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Friday.
Brown-Turner was also on the preseason list for last season's Naismith Trophy, and it marks the second year in a row that two Wolfpack players have started their years in consideration for the award that honors the National Player of the Year.
A native of Oxon Hill, Md., Brown-Turner enters her senior campaign as a member of the Preseason All-ACC Team and on the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award for the top shooting guard. As a junior last season, she averaged 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting at a career-best clip of 44.4 percent. Brown-Turner hit double figures in scoring in 16 outings last year, highlighted by a season-high 20 points in the team's Elite Eight game against UConn.
Through three completed seasons at NC State, Brown-Turner averages 43.7 percent (375-of-859) shooting and 35.8 percent (125-of-349) from three-point range. She is just 19 points away from becoming the 36th Wolfpack player to join the 1,000 career point club as she has compiled 981 points and 188 assists with the Wolfpack.
Johnson, who was the ACC Sixth Player of the Year following the 2021-22 season, is the Pack's top returning scorer from last year. The junior was featured as an Honorable Mention all-conference honoree following her first season at NC State during which she averaged 10.8 points, 2.2 assists and shot 40.2 percent from the floor. Last season, she scored in double figures a total of 18 times, with her 24-point outing against Washington State standing as the highest scoring performance by a member of the Wolfpack team.
A native of Philadelphia, Diamond has put up career averages of 13.2 points, 2.3 assists, 44.5 percent shooting and 39.9 percent three-point shooting in two completed campaigns.
A midseason team of 30 players will be announced in early January, and competition will then be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists in early March. Following those results, four finalists will be named on March 21, 2023, and the winner of the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on March 29, 2023.
