NC State is off to best start since 2018-19 team started 13-1
RALEIGH – The NC State men's basketball team improved to 7-1 on the season Tuesday night with a commanding 85-64 win over William & Mary (3-5) inside PNC Arena.
The Pack is now off to its best start since head coach Kevin Keatts' 2018-19 team opened the year with a 13-1 record.
For the third time in as many games, the Wolfpack used a decisive run to break open the contest.
After back-to-back baskets gave the Tribe a 19-17 lead midway through the first half, NC State closed on a 26-9 run over the final 11 minutes of play which sent the Wolfpack to the locker room with a 43-28 advantage.
A strong performance from NC State on both ends of the floor continued in the second half. The Wolfpack outscored the Tribe 27-11 over the opening 10 minutes of the second frame, including an 18-3 run that extended the lead from 54-36 to 72-39 in less than five minutes of game action.
The Pack finished the evening shooting 49.2% from the field and 42.9% from beyond the arc, with the field-goal percentage being NC State's third-highest of the season and its three-point percentage the second-highest thus far.
For the third time this year, Casey Morsell was the team's leading scorer with a game-high 23 points. The Ft. Washington, Md., native tied his career-high with six three-pointers made.
Morsell was one of five NC State players to finish in double figures, as Terquavion Smith finished with 13 points, Dusan Mahorcic and Jack Clark added 12 apiece, and Jarkel Joiner totaled 11. Mahorcic finished the game with a team-high nine rebounds, one shy of recording a double-double, and added a career-best three assists in his first game coming off the bench.
Additionally, Smith led the team with a career-high seven assists as the Pack had 18 assists for the game.
Furthermore, five members of the Pack made their way onto the stat sheet in scoring with LJ Thomas posting seven points, DJ Burns, Jr., Greg Gantt, and Ernest Ross each adding two points, and Jordan Snell drilling a late-game free throw to finish with one point.
Having led by as many as 37 points, NC State dominated throughout the game's entirety with all 15 members of the roster getting the chance to see the floor.
The win served as the third straight for the Wolfpack this season and improved NC State's all-time record against William & Mary to 24-6. The win also pushed head coach Kevin Keatts to 41-2 in non-conference home games during the regular season.
The Wolfpack will now shift its focus to ACC play as conference-foe Pittsburgh (5-3) will travel to Raleigh on Friday, December 2. The Panthers are coming off a commanding 87-58 win at Northwestern as part of the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Friday's game will be held in PNC Arena with tipoff slated for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
