Second Half Burst Sends Pack Past Dayton

NC State went on a 17-0 early in the second half to turn a one point deficit into a 16 point lead
PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS – The NC State men's basketball team went on a 17-0 run early in the second half and held off every Dayton push to knock off the Flyers, 76-64, Thursday evening at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The Pack led 36-32 at halftime, but Dayton opened the final 20 minutes with a. 7-2 run to take a 39-38 lead with 15:15 to play.
NC State responded with a game-turning 17-0 run after Dayton took its first and only lead of the second half.
The Pack's run started with Terquavion Smith finding Dusan Mahorcic in transition for a dunk.
DJ Burns, Jr., made a hook shot on the Pack's next possession to increase the lead and then Jarkel Joiner followed with two free throws.
Casey Morsell made a lay-up to keep the run going and two more free throws from Joiner pushed the run to 10-0.
Burns Jr., scored again to increase the lead to double-digits and then Smith had a steal and Jack Clark cleaned up a Joiner miss to keep the run going.
Joiner connected on a fast-break three-point play to close the run at 17-0 and give the Pack a 55-39 lead with 10:46 left.
Overall, the Pack scored on nine consecutive possessions during its streak.
The lead would stay in double digits for the next nine minutes of game action until the Flyers got within eight, 72-64, with 1:46 to go. The Pack came up empty on its ensuing offensive possession, but Mahorcic came up with a huge block on the other end Joiner gathered the rebound and was fouled.
He made both free throws to end the threat as Dayton would never score again.
Joiner finished with a season-high 27 points on 7-of-12 shooting and connected on 11-of-13 from the foul line. The Ole Miss transfer scored 20 of his 27 points in the final 20 minutes.
Smith finished with 11 as he scored all of his points in the first half.
Clark and Burns, Jr., each finished with 10.
Dayton jumped out of the gates and quickly took a 19-9 lead, eight minutes into the game. NC State went on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 21-20 with 7:33 to play in the first half. The Pack then went on an 8-1 run to take. 36-30 lead late in the half before a late Flyers basket sent the teams into the locker room with the Pack up 36-32.
NC State forced Dayton into 18 turnovers, 13 in the final 20 minutes.
Toumani Camara finished the game with 19 points for Dayton and DaRon Holmes II added 17.
NC State will play in the fifth place game Friday night at 10 p.m. against the winner of the BYU-Butler game. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
