
NC State picks up two wins in Albany, defeating Central Michigan and Illinois

ALBANY, NY The NC State wrestling team improved to 5-0 overall, earning two victories in Albany, NY.Â

The No. 9 Wolfpack got the weekend off to a hot start, defeating Central Michigan 26-12. NC State turned around and defeated Illinois, 27-12.

Freshman Troy Hohman picked up a win in his dual debut in the 125 class, defeating Sean Spidle, 4-3 to start the day for the Wolfpack.

Hohman was one of several wrestlers who got their first action last weekend at the Journeymen Wrestling Round Robin event.

Jacob Cox was another young wrestler who got his feet wet at the Journeymen and found himself in the lineup against the Chippewas. Cox was forced to medical forfeit against Jacob Cox, giving Central Michigan a 6-3 lead.

NC State got momentum back when Ryan Jack and Jackson Arrington pulled off back-to-back wins. Jack, ranked No. 19 in the 141 class, improved to 3-0 with a win over Ja'Kerion Meritt, earning a major decision, 12-3.

Arrington defeated No. 14 Johnny Lovett, 4-3, in overtime.

That was just the start of a good day for Jack and Arrington, who each picked up major decisions against Illinois later in the night.Â

Don Cates continued his streak, knocking out Tracy Hubbard, 3-2. The Pack ended the dual with three straight wins. Trent Hidlay and Isaac Trumble each remained undefeated. Hidlay earned another pin to his impressive 2022 resume and Trumble got a 11-2 major victory over Cameron Wood.

Owen Trephan ended the first dual with a 4-2 win over Bryan Caves.Â

No. 6 Ed Scott bounced back against Illinois, earning a 15-3 major decision over Anthony Federico.Â

The Fighting Illini cut into the NC State lead when an Edmond Ruth win cut the NC State lead to three (15-12), but Hidlay earned a 23-7 technical fall win over Dylan Connell in the 184 class. Hidlay improved to 5-0 on the season. An 11-4 decision by Trumble over Zack Braunagel pushed the NC State lead to 23-12.Â

Once again, Trephan finished strong, defeating Matt Wroblewski, 10-2.
