Award recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I college basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – NC State sophomore guard Terquavion Smith was one of 20 players to make the 2023 Jerry West Award watch list as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
The award is named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West. The annual honor, in its ninth year, recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
Smith was named to the Preseason All-ACC First-Team last week.
Smith was an All-ACC Rookie Team member and honorable mention All-ACC team selection last season as a freshman. He was named ACC Freshman of the Week four times.
The Greenville, N.C., native started 25 of 32 games, including all 20 ACC games, and averaged 16.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 39.8 percent from the field, including 36.9 percent from three-point range. His 16.3 scoring average was eighth-highest in the ACC and second amongst the league's freshman.
Smith made 96 three-pointers which were the most in program history by a freshman and third-most in a single-season in program history. His 96 three-pointers are fourth-most by a freshman in ACC history and his 3.0 three-pointers per game average led the ACC and was the first freshman to lead the ACC in three-pointers made since Duke's J.J. Redick in the 2002-03 season.
The NC State men's basketball team plays its lone exhibition game of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at PNC Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and is free for fans to attend.
