Annual award honors the top shooting guard in women’s NCAA Division I basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Wolfpack women's basketball senior Jakia Brown-Turner was featured as one of 20 watch list candidates for the 2023 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.
This is Brown-Turner's third year in a row starting her campaign on the watch list for the honor that recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I basketball.
Brown-Turner is poised to lead the 2022-23 Wolfpack squad as the most seasoned veteran on a talented roster. After starting more games than any other rookie in the Wes Moore era in 2019-20, Brown-Turner has since appeared in all but one of the team's 93 games the past three seasons and earned the starting nod in 91 of those outings.
A native of Oxon Hill, Md., Brown-Turner averaged 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game during her junior campaign. She shot at a career-best clip of 44.4 percent (131-of-195) and knocked down 33.9 percent (42-of-124) of her three-point attempts in 2021-22. Brown-Turner hit double figures in scoring in 16 outings with a well-balanced Wolfpack squad last season, highlighted by a season-high 20 points in the team's Elite Eight game against UConn.
On her career at NC State, Brown-Turner averages 43.7 percent (375-of-859) shooting and 35.8 percent (125-of-349) from three-point range. Looking to become the 36th Wolfpack player to join the 1,000 career point club, Brown-Turner has compiled 981 points and 188 assists in three completed seasons at NC State.
In mid-February, the watch list will be narrowed down to 10 players. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ann Meyers Drysdale and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Details for the presentation of this year's award will be announced at a later date.
Wolfpack fans are encouraged to participate in this year's Fan Voting during each of the three rounds. For more information and to vote beginning on Oct. 21, visit HoopHallAwards.com.
