RALEIGH – Incoming freshman Priska Nugroho has signed a National Letter of Intent to become a part of the NC State women's tennis program, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw on Friday.
The Jakarta, Indonesia, native is set to join the Wolfpack for the start of the spring semester and dual match action. Nugroho has been ranked as high as ninth in the world in the ITF Juniors standings, 993 in the WTA Singles rankings and 779 in the WTA Doubles rankings.
"I feel extremely fortunate to be able to welcome a player with Priska's background and future aspirations to NC State," said Earnshaw. "Priska's experience in reaching and winning in the latter stages of Grand Slam junior events and being the highest ranked ITF player ever to sign with the Wolfpack will make her an immediate impact player and one of the top freshmen in college tennis. Beyond her resume, what immediately stood out to us with Priska is the passion and the excitement she exudes when it comes to tennis. In character and attitude alone, Priska has exactly what it takes to compete at the highest level. Added to this, she has an incredibly varied game and athleticism to complement these traits.
"David (Secker) and I strongly believe we have developed a proven pathway that can carry Priska on her journey towards being a professional tennis player as well as to being a standout student-athlete. Priska is a STATEment addition for our program, and we couldn't be more excited to add her to the team immediately ahead of the 2022 season. Go Pack!"
Nugroho joins the Wolfpack program following an incredibly decorated junior tennis career during which she collected seven ITF Junior singles titles and five ITF Junior doubles titles. Most recently, she picked up ITF pro circuit doubles titles at the 2021 W15 Frederiksberg, Bad Waltersdorf and Sharm El-Sheikh events and was the singles runner up at the W15 Cairo tournament.
She also brings a wealth of Grand Slam tournament experience with her. Nugroho won the 2020 Australian Open Juniors doubles title and reached the third round in singles action at that tournament in both 2019 and 2020. She has also previously advanced to the singles quarterfinals at both the Wimbledon and US Open Juniors in 2019.
In 2017, Nugroho was crowned as the U14 WTA Future Stars champion after competing among a group of the top 48 players from over 20 Asian and Pacific countries. She competed at the Southeast Asian Games in 2019, where she was a bronze medalist, and also represented her nation as a member of the Indonesian Federation Cup team in 2020.
"I chose NC State because I like the high-level tennis program here and also the work ethic of the coaches and players," said Nugroho. "The city of Raleigh itself is beautiful, and I have loved it ever since arriving here. I'm very much looking forward to the start of the season and am ready to give my maximum effort for this team! Go Pack!"
Nugroho will officially begin her NC State career in a few weeks as she and the Wolfpack open the 2022 dual match season.
