Terquavion Smith scored a career-high 34 points in defeat
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina hit 10 three-pointers in the opening half and NC State could never recover as the Tar Heels knocked off the Pack, 100-80, Saturday afternoon inside the Dean E. Smith Center.
Freshman guard Terquavion Smith scored a career-high 34 points to lead NC State. The Greenville, N.C. native was 9-of-19 shooting and knocked down 11-of-13 free throw attempts.
Smith's 34 points are the second-most by a freshman in program history. Ernie Myers with 35 points on Jan. 26, 1983 against Duke remains the NC State freshman record.
Smith also tied his career-high with four steals.
Senior forward Jericole Hellems finished with 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. The 25 points are the most for the senior against an ACC opponent in his career.
The Tar Heels shot 10-of-15 from long range in the opening 20 minutes and 20-of-32 overall to open a 56-31 advantage over NC State at the break.
UNC would extend its lead to 35 points in the opening five minutes of the second half.
The Tar Heels finished with 15 three-pointers and shot 55.6 percent from three-point range.
North Carolina had four players score in double figures, led by Caleb Love with 21 points. Armando Bacot added a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
NC State starts a three-game homestand Wednesday when it hosts Syracuse. Tipoff at PNC Arena is scheduled for 9 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
