NC State Falls to #4 Pitt

RALEIGH – NC State fought hard throughout the match but could not handle No. 4 Pitt's defense as the Wolfpack fell, 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 18-25) in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action inside of Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The Pack (7-6, 1-1 ACC) stuck with the Panthers (12-0, 2-0 ACC) in the first two sets but was unable to hold off Pitt's dynamic offense to drop its first conference match of the season.
Offensively, junior Jade Parchment led the way with a match-high 13 kills to go along with a trio of blocks and three digs. Freshman Amanda Rice followed behind with seven kills on a solid .312 hitting clip.
Junior Kristen McDaniel recorded a match-high 27 assists with four digs. Graduate student Kaylee Frazier led the Pack with eight digs on the day.
Set One (NC State 23, #4 Pitt 25)
The first set was a tough battle as there were 15 ties and six lead changes. The biggest lead of the set was a three-point lead at 2-5 and 3-6 by Pitt. The final tie came at 22 from a Panthers service error. NC State recorded a service error and Pitt tallied an ace to force a Pack timeout. Coming out of the break, Rice recorded a kill to make it 23-24 but Pitt answered with a kill to take the first set.
Set Two (NC State 20, #4 Pitt 25)
This set was similar to the first set as there were also six lead changes but only nine ties. NC State started to chip away a little bit after the halfway point as the Pack held a 16-14 lead but Pitt responded with a 4-0 run to take the 18-16 lead. Both teams battled for the next couple of points forcing the final tie at 20 and making Pitt use a timeout. Following the reset, Pitt reeled off a 5-0 run for the 2-0 lead.
Set Three (NC State 18, #4 Pitt 25)
The final set was all Pitt as the Panthers hit .323 with 14 kills while recording six blocks and 15 digs to hold off any push NC State tried to make. The Pack did not let up without a fight through, as it held off the match-point four times but ultimately dropped the third and final set.

NC State will hit the road to Florida for its next two ACC matchups. The Pack will open the weekend with a Friday contest against Florida State at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Sunday game against Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m.
