RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State kicks off its ACC schedule hosting #9 Clemson Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium. The game will kick at 3:30 p.m., and will be televised on ESPN.
Â
The Wolfpack (2-1, 0-0 ACC) has won its last five ACC home openers dating back to 2016, and has won four of its last five ACC openers overall.
Â
"Now we get to play the best team in our league over my period here at NC State," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "We all know they've done a great job and Dabo [Swinney] and his staff have built a dominant program.
Â
"They're well-coached. They do it right on and off the field, and they bring out one of the top five defenses in college football to Carter-Finley."
Â
Coming into the contest, both defenses have been leading the way. Clemson currently ranks second in the NCAA in allowing 7.0 points per game, but the Pack defense is not far behind allowing only 10.3 ppg, a mark that is fifth nationally.
Â
NC State has also gotten its defense off the field, as opponents have only converted 9-of-43 (29.3%) of their third down conversations, ranking fifth-best in the NCAA. The stat is even more impressive as before halftime the first three foes were a combined 2-of-23 on third downs, including 0-of-10 in the first quarter.
Â
The Pack has used that strong first half showing to their advantage, outscoring its foes 65-14 before halftime.
Â
"Games like this a lot can be made of the matchups," said Doeren. "To me this is more about us in this game and we just need to do what we did last week and in the first week against much, much, much better competition, but we need to focus on doing our job."
Â
The Pack and Tigers are meeting for the first time in two years, as COVID rescheduling took the game off last season's schedule. That was the first time since 1970 the two teams did not play in a season.
Â
Three of the last four home contests against the Tigers have come down to the fourth quarter, and the Pack will be facing a top-10 Clemson squad sixth straight time.
Â
In addition to the rivalry game, NC State has been celebrating #PackUnited throughout the week. #PackUnited is a student-led initiative thought the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee that focuses on diversity, equality and social justice.
Â
LB Isaiah Moore and C Grant Gibson were driving forces behind the movement's inception and its growth since the spring of 2020.
Â
"This is #PackUnited week for our student athletes and our campus and it's really, really important part of what's going on, not just at NC State, but in our country," said Doeren. "Really proud of our student athletes.
Â
"When this began a year ago and the things that they've taught me and taught our staff brought our team closer together, and celebrating our diversity and celebrating our differences and loving each other for them. Very proud that these guys are doing that this week and look forward to that being a part of what happens on our campus throughout the week."
