Women’s Soccer Battles To 1-1 Draw With Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – NC State women's soccer (1-0-2) wrapped up a three-game road swing to on Thursday night with a 1-1 (2OT) draw against Campbell (0-1-1) at the Eakes Athletics Complex. The Wolfpack remains undefeated heading into its home opener Sunday.
"I thought we had a lot of opportunities in the final third, but I thought our decision making wasn't as great as it could have been. In the second half and overtime periods we had some good looks. This is a young team, and the hardest part of the game is the final 30 yards," said head coach Tim Santoro.
"You can see us thinking about things and trying things, we just don't have the execution yet. We're a work in progress but we're going in the right direction for sure."
Annika Wohner found the back of the net in the 23rd minute when she placed a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box into the upper right corner. It was her first official career goal, as she was responsible for three of the team's four goals scored in the preseason.
Campbell, the defending Big South Tournament champions, managed to knot the score at one in the 53rd minute. After a couple of chances inside the box following a corner kick, Elyssa Nowowieski scored her second goal of the season.
The Wolfpack outshot the Camels, 6-1, in the overtime periods, and put three of those shots on frame. In total the squad held a 16-12 advantage over Campbell throughout the 110 minutes, and controlled possession for a majority of the match at 54 percent.
Mia Vaughan and Michaela Virgin both made their first starts in a fall match, and a combined nine freshman saw playing time throughout the contest.
The Wolfpack will open its home slate Sunday when it welcomes 10th-ranked South Carolina at Dail Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
