RALEIGH – NC State women's tennis has added Sara Nayar to its roster, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw on Monday.
Nayar is transferring from Colorado where she completed three seasons playing for the Buffs. She will be enrolled at NC State beginning with the upcoming fall semester.
"Sara's success and experience playing at the top of the lineup in the Pac 12 are going to translate very well to help our program sustain and enhance our momentum in the ACC and nationally," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "Reciprocally, both Dave (Secker) and I are excited to get to work with Sara and execute on a plan to see how far she can take her tennis over the two years remaining in her collegiate career, to try and put her in a position to have options both on and off the court at graduation. We couldn't be more excited to welcome Sara to Raleigh just as a new school year is about to commence. Go Pack!"
While at Colorado, Nayar competed primarily at the top singles spot for the Buffs. In the fall of 2019, she was the singles runner-up at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship and reached the doubles quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships.
A native of Queensland, Australia, Nayar has been ranked as high as 65th nationally in singles and 31st nationally in doubles. She also reached a career-high ITF Juniors ranking of 293 in September 2019.
"Raleigh reminds me of home, and that's something I was looking for in a college," said Nayar. "The campus is absolutely beautiful, and while I was walking around, I felt like this is the place I'm meant to be."
Prior to coming to college, Nayar represented Malaysia at the 2019 Fed Cup and also won ITF Juniors tournaments in both Malaysia and Australia. She owns a Grade 4 IGF Juniors Tournament win at the ITF Perlis Junior Championship and also made it to the doubles final of the Queensland Junior Championships.
Nayar is the daughter of Murali Nayar and Swinder Grewal and has two sisters, Uma and Anja. She was born in Malaysia and grew up in Australia. She is passionate about learning ways to make the palm oil industry more sustainable and wrote a policy memo on the topic.
