RALEIGH – Incoming NC State freshman Aiden Hayes capped off his pre-collegiate career with high honors as he was named Swimming World Magazine's Male High School Swimmer of the Year last week.
The Norman, Okla., native put together a stellar senior season, most recently earning a spot at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June. He established himself as the fastest 18-year-old in the country in butterfly at that meet, and he nearly reached the semifinals of the 100-meter race with his personal best of 52.67 that ranked 17th.
In February, Hayes made national waves by taking down a pair of national high school records. He lowered the mark in the 50-yard freestyle (19.20) and the 100-yard butterfly (45.47). Hayes' butterfly record bettered a time that had stood since 2013.
Hayes was also honored as the Oklahoma Athlete of the Year across all sports in the state. He and the rest of the members of NC State's elite recruiting class of 2021 will join the Wolfpack for the upcoming collegiate campaign.
