RALEIGH – Coming off back-to-back ACC Championship titles, the NC State women's basketball team has been announced as a host and part of the 2021 Preseason WNIT field for the upcoming 2021-2022 season.
The 2021 Preseason WNIT Classic features two four-team pods and a three-game guarantee. NC State serves as one of two hosts, the other being Kansas State. Coming to Raleigh will be Florida, Towson and Wofford as Kansas State, North Carolina A&T, UT Martin and Western Kentucky round out the tournament field.
Each site will play a round-robin format with NC State hosting Kansas State on Nov. 19 for the final game of the tournament. No champion will be crowd as each pod will have its own all-tournament team.
The 2021 edition is the 27th Preseason WNIT after the 2020 tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19. Recent champions include Oregon State (2019), Iowa State (2018), Louisville (2017), Notre Dame (2016) and Baylor (2015).
NC State finished its 2020-21 campaign with a No. 7 ranking in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, the second-highest in program history. The Wolfpack concluded its season with a 22-3 record and reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the third season in a row. NC State defended its ACC Tournament title to win back-to-back crowns for the first time ever, on the way to earning the program's first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Pack spent every week of the 2020-21 season in the top 10 of the Coaches Poll, including three-straight weeks at a program-best-tying No. 2. NC State is set to return its entire starting rotation from last season, including all five All-ACC honorees and two-time All-American, Elissa Cunane. The Wolfpack also welcomes the addition of two star transfers in Madison Hayes and Diamond Johnson, who join the incoming 2021 freshman class.
The remainder of the 2021-22 NC State women's basketball schedule will be released at a later time.
