Wolfpack to Open NCAA Championships Competition Against FGCU

RALEIGH - The No. 24 NC State men's tennis team (11-8, 7-3 ACC) is slated to start NCAA Championships action Friday, May 7 at 10 a.m. against ASUN runner-up Florida Gulf Coast (8-6, 5-1 ASUN). The first-round matchup will take place at the Columbia, S.C., site.
The winner of Friday's match will move on to play the winner of No. 13 South Carolina and UNCW Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m.
ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
Fans over the age of two may buy tickets to the match for $5 each. A student of a participating school with a valid University ID can purchase a discounted ticket for $3.
PACK IN THE RANKINGS
NC State moved up to No. 24 in the May 5 Oracle/ITA rankings and has remained in the top 25 nationally for the entirety of the 2021 season.
In the singles rankings, fifth year Alexis Galarneau checks in at No. 25 while Rafa Izquierdo Luque sits at No. 95.
Tadas Babelis and Yannai Barkai remain the Wolfpack's highest-ranked doubles pair at No. 30. Babelis is ranked 42nd as well alongside partner Robin Catry. Galarneau and Robert Turzak check into the doubles rankings at No. 55.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolfpack took its quarterfinals match in the ACC tournament, defeating Florida State 4-1 to advance to the semifinals for the second-straight season. NC State fell to to eventual ACC Champion Virginia in a 4-0 decision in the semifinals.
ALL-ACC HONORS
Galarneau became the second student-athlete in NC State men's tennis history to collect four All-ACC laurels with his 2021 First Team selection. The Laval, Canada, native was awarded Second Team All-ACC as a freshman and has garnered First Team All-ACC honors in the three seasons since (the ACC did not award All-ACC accolades in 2020).
Babelis tabbed his second career All-ACC honor in 2021 as a member of the All-ACC Third Team. The senior was a constant part of the singles and doubles lineups for the Wolfpack and took down five ranked doubles opponents during the season.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Florida Gulf Coast compiled an 8-6 record on the season and made a run in the 2021 ASUN tournament, falling in the championship match to Liberty, 4-0. The Eagles defeated North Florida and Lipscomb on their way to the championship match.
Janmagnus Johnson checks into the Oracle/ITA singles rankings at No. 88 while Pedro Maciel and Randy Wilson are tied for 62nd in the doubles rankings.
UP NEXT
With a win Friday, the team advances to the second-round match Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m. to face the winner of No. 13 South Carolina and UNCW.
