RALEIGH – The NC State women's tennis team has added Sophie Abrams to its roster, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw on Wednesday.
Abrams is transferring from Memphis where she just completed her freshman campaign with the Tigers. She will be immediately eligible to play for the Wolfpack beginning with the 2021-22 season.
"We are incredibly fortunate to be able to add a proven player of Sophie's level to our program at this time," said Earnshaw. "This spring, Sophie clearly showed she has all the skills to be a force in college tennis. What became evident in speaking with her over the past several weeks were her goals, and the vision for her game resonated strongly with program standards and expectations. I'm confident that Sophie's athleticism, competitive spirit and excitement to represent the Wolfpack are going to be huge assets in our continued climb both in the ACC and nationally."
Following her rookie season, Abrams was named AAC Freshman of the Year and earned unanimous All-Conference Team recognition. She played on court one for the Tigers and reached as high as No. 70 in the national singles rankings and No. 52 in the doubles rankings.
Abrams went 11-7 in dual matches at that top singles spot. One of her victories came in straight sets against then-No. 39 Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss (Machalova is currently ranked No. 29 nationally).
"NC State is the complete package, from the dedicated coaches, teammates and high-level competition to the education and beautiful campus and city," said Abrams. "I'm very excited to be able to attend NC State for the next three years!"
A native of Germantown, Tenn., Abrams cracked the top 850 in the world in doubles as she reached a career-high WTA ranking of 844. She was the No. 3 player in the state of Tennessee coming out of high school according to TennisRecruiting.com.
The daughter of Peter and LeeAnn Abrams, she has two brothers and is the owner of two cats. Abrams was a competitive gymnast for eight years and also plays bass guitar. She plans to pursue a pre-med track while at NC State.
