Kylee Alons Defends 50 Freestyle Title on Day 2 of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Kylee Alons repeated as 50-yard freestyle champion to highlight four podium finishes for the Pack on the second day of action at the ACC Championships.
After two days of competition at the conference meet, the Wolfpack women stand in second place with 486 total points. The squad is just 24 points behind current leader Virginia.
50 FREESTYLE:
After the morning prelims session, Alons entered the night with the top seed in the A final. She was able to successfully defend the title that she first won in 2020, with her finals time of 21.78 clocking in at first place.

The Pack loaded up on points in this event, as Katharine Berkoff (4th, 22.08) and Heather Maccausland (6th, 22.32) also swam in the top flight.
• B finalists: Sophie Hansson (22.40, 9th), Sirena Rowe (22.46, 11th) Victoria Fonville (22.56, 13th)
• C finalist: Olivia Calegan (22.84, 21st)
200 IM:
The Wolfpack women also had three swimmers in the 200-yard individual medley A final. Julia Poole took third place with a 1:54.52 mark that was split seconds off the program record and was the best time of her career.
Freshman Abby Arens impressed with a fifth-place time of 1:55.45, which checks in at third in the school record books, and Emma Muzzy placed sixth in 1:56.66.
• B finalist: Andrea Podmanikova (1:58.39, 13th)
• C finalist: Olivia Fisher (2:01.61, 23rd)
500 FREESTYLE:
Kate Moore finished on the 500-yard freestyle podium for the third season in a row. The senior went 4:38.09 in the A final to take second place. Freshman Yara Hierath also swam in the A final, with her time of 4:44.83 checking in at eighth in program history. She took sixth place overall.
• C finalist: Kay Foley (4:46.82, 18th)
200 FREE RELAY:
NC State capped off the night with another silver medal relay finish, this time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Berkoff (21.85), Alons (21.11), Hansson (21.83) and Maccausland (21.81) went 1:26.59. They were narrowly out-touched by Virginia's winning relay that clocked in at 1:26.54.
DIVING:
NC State wrapped up action on the springboards before turning its attention to platform for the remainder of the meet. Rachel Burston was the only top-24 finisher for the Wolfpack women on one-meter with a score of 245.05, and Patrick O'Brien (316.70) and Bayne Bennett (300.90) earned top-20 finishes on three-meter to score for the Pack men headed into next week's action.
UP NEXT:
The Pack returns to the pool on Friday for the third day of competition at the ACC Championships. Prelims are set for an 11 a.m. start, with diving finals at 2:30 p.m. and swimming finals at 7 p.m. The full date will be aired live on the ACCNX.
