RALEIGH – No. 2 NC State women's basketball won its final home game of the 2021 calendar year on Sunday afternoon as it defeated visiting Virginia by an 82-55 score inside Reynolds Coliseum. With the win the Wolfpack improved to 11-2 on the year and 2-0 in the ACC as the team continues the rest of the regular season against league opponents.
Eleven different Wolfpack players tallied points, led by double figures from Elissa Cunane (17), Raina Perez (16) and Camille Hobby (10). The Pack shot 50 percent (29-of-58) to move to a perfect 7-0 in which it makes at least half of its field-goal attempts.
Perez's stat line highlighted the outing for NC State. The graduate guard did not miss from the floor, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 which included a 3-of-3 clip from long range. She also added a team-leading three assists and only turned the ball over once in nearly 35 minutes of action.
Hobby's game marked her fourth 10+ point game of the year after she only hit that mark in three games last season. She shot 3-of-4 in the second quarter alone to rack up eight points a block and a rebound coming off the bench in that period. Cunane then enjoyed a dominant second half in which she posted 13 of her 17.
The Wolfpack owned a 38-28 advantage in rebounds, with Cunane also leading the team in that category with six. The team also outscored Virginia 34-20 in the paint and got an impressive 33 points out of players coming off the bench. The Cavaliers never led in the outing, and NC State held a lead for 38:50 of the game's 40 minutes.
NC State built up a double-digit lead in the second quarter, using a 14-2 run to separate itself by 11 points (42-31) after 10 minutes of play. The Pack went on to limit Virginia to just 24 points in the second half, outscoring the Cavaliers 19-12 in the third quarter and 21-12 in the fourth quarter. After scoring 13 of the final 18 of the third period and hitting the first three buckets of the fourth period, the Wolfpack led by 20 or more for the entirety of the last quarter.
Following the holiday break, NC State will make the trip to Clemson, S.C., on Dec. 30 to take on the Tigers. Tip-off from Littlejohn Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
